Can’t Beet This!


This year the farm is offering a half season share lasting 10 weeks. These shares will be delivered beginning on September 11th and conclude along with the full season shares on November 13th. Fruit shares are also available. 

The price for a half-season/10 week share is $173.00 Fruit is an additional $120.00 

This is an exciting offer because we can tell what kind a season it is already – especially abundant! Most every week we have receiving 9 0r 10 items – sometimes more. To give you an idea of what that means, last week (August 28th) we received: Tomatoes (3 lb), Eggplant (4 lb), Peppers (1.5 lb), Beets (1 lb), Kohlrabi (1), String Beans (1 lb), Leeks (5), Lettuce (2), Fennel (1) & Cabbage (1).

Are you thinking about adding fruit or yogurt to your CSA share this season? Time is running out to decide. The farm needs to know how much of the ‘extra’ items to order for the season, so our orders need to be in before month end – and that is just a week away!

If you are planning to order just veggies or veggies and fruit you are encouraged to pay on-line. Other extras must be paid for via Money Order. Remember to note which CSA you are with.

Getting produce from all over the world means that we can easily forget how the weather can impact the rates that plants grow… Not so with a CSA. That said, we received the following update this week from the farm:

Due to this unusually cold Spring, we cannot confirm at this time a starting date. We are looking at the second or third week in June. Warmer weather could make it the 2nd week and continued cold weather could move it to the 3rd week. We should have a better idea by the end of this month and will let you know as soon as we can so you can plan.

Considering the targeted start is the second week of June anyway, this is not so much news as a reminder – local weather impacts local produce. Last season started a week earlier than anticipated – this year we won’t be so lucky.

We will keep you updated as we get more news from the farm, in the mean time keep your fingers crossed for a season that starts right on time.

CSA Cukes


Do you have one of those teens who pulls some carrots and cucumbers out of the fridge and sits down happily munching while checking her phone? What about a little one one who requests broccoli without being bribed with the promise of ice cream? No? Me either. Those kids are like something out of a fairy tale!

Thankfully just because your kids don’t want a salad doesn’t meant they won’t eat veggies at all. Here are 5 pointers to help get the good stuff in them.

Set the example: Eat your veggies. No excuses. You need them too.

Try something new: If you don’t, chances are your kids won’t. Make a different side dish to go with your standards. Try a veggie that you have to research how to prepare. Participate in Meatless Monday. Be brave.

Make veggies an easy option: You might be surprised how quickly veggies will disappear when they are cut and ready to eat on the top shelf in the fridge. Make your vegetables the first dish on the table when everyone is hungry. (I’ve seen a teen sneak roasted brussel sprouts this way. Not kidding!)

Make them pretty: It takes just a minute more, but there is something to be said about foods that are visually appealing. Same is true if they sound appealing, so feel free to rename whatever you are making.

Hide them: Actually don’t, just add them to everything and get your family use to the idea. Lasagna has spinach in it. Ramen noodles have carrot ribbons in them. Yes, those are zucchini muffins. It won’t take long before your family forgets that they every had it any other way.

Join a CSA: It is a shameless plug, but farm fresh veggies taste better. You are never going to win them over with canned peas or a tomato grown 1000 miles away. Get the good stuff and enjoy!

If this is your first CSA experience you are probably wondering what “5-8 Seasonal Veggies” means. Tomatoes? Kale? Radishes? What kinds of veggies can I expect?
It might be easier to list the veggies that our farmer doesn’t grow, but here is a list of the produce we have received in past seasons.

Early July Share

Are you worried that your share is going to be more veggies than your family can reasonably eat? You are not alone. “Too many veggies” is the most common issue we hear from members in their first year. There are worse problems to have, but still, no one likes to see good food go to waste. One great answer – save it for later.

Screeeeeeech! I hear you stop reading. “Sure,” you say “It is all well and good for the seasoned CSA member to say ‘save it for later’, but I don’t can/pickle/preserve/etc!” I could proceed by hi-lighting the benefits and ease blah blah blah, but I’m owning up to the truth: solutions like canning, preserving or pickling take time and energy and can be outright intimidating. Besides, there is an easier way – The Freezer!

Some veggies require special preparation to freeze, but some of the most common that we receive in abundance take little to no prep at all. Here is a quick (incomplete) list:

Peppers – Wash, core and cut – drop into a freezer bag – you can enjoy them all winter long. Bonus – no worrying about the dirty dozen ranking!

Zucchini & Summer Squash – Wash, slice, freeze. This is a terrific way to save them for winter soups and casseroles. Do you have a favorite Zucchini Bread recipe? Grate and freeze in the portion your recipe calls for.

Bok Choi – Wash, chop, freeze. Enjoy in soups and stir-fry.

Basil – Wash, dry, lay leaves flat between layers of wax paper in a freezer bag – Fresh basil flavor all winter long.

Greens – to freeze Kale, Swiss Chard or Collard Greens just wash, blanche (Drop in boiling water for a min), rinse in cold water, squeeze dry, bag and freeze.

Green Beans – Clean, blanch, cool, bag, freeze.
