Beets!

Can’t Beet This!

This year the farm is offering a half season share lasting 10 weeks. These shares will be delivered beginning on September 11th and conclude along with the full season shares on November 13th. Fruit shares are also available.

This is an exciting offer because we can tell what kind a season it is already – especially abundant! Most every week we have receiving 9 0r 10 items – sometimes more. To give you an idea of what that means, last week (August 28th) we received: Tomatoes (3 lb), Eggplant (4 lb), Peppers (1.5 lb), Beets (1 lb), Kohlrabi (1), String Beans (1 lb), Leeks (5), Lettuce (2), Fennel (1) & Cabbage (1).

We are co-hosting a tree give-away with Susty Q on Sunday May 4th! Would anyone like a Free Tree?

Banksy's Clean Streets

Banksy’s Clean Streets

Those of us who live in the area know, Liberty Avenue isn’t the greenest or the cleanest place to shop or just walk around. Thanks to the organizing efforts of Sustainable Queens, we have a great opportunity to do something about it!

On Sunday, May 5, 2013 from 10:00am until 3:00pm volunteers will be collecting the overflowing garbage, and other waste found on Liberty Avenue in one spot so the Department of Sanitation can pick it up! Sanitation is making a specific trip to do so as part of Taking Liberty. Making this pile makes a statement: We want our community to be Clean and Green!

If Garbage collection isn’t your thing (Got little kids?! We understand!), there will be plenty of less ‘dirty’ dirt activities you can participate in too: beautifying tree beds, planting flowers and adding a bit of festive art.

All ages are invited. Tools, food, art supplies and more will be provided.

The meeting place where activities will begin is at Lefferts and Liberty by the old Rigas flowershop by the A train.

Interested in seeing where our goodies come from? The fine folks of the Washington Square CSA are organizing a farm trip for Saturday, April 27th. They have even set up shared transportation to get there for a nominal fee. (Of course you can drive yourself too). The farm would like to have a head count in advance, so registration (& payment for transit) is due by April 13th. For details and to register, contact Alison Wehr at: info@washintonsquarecsa.com

Have you ever though ‘there must be a way to make this into something useful!’ but didn’t know what or how? Build it Green and Materials for the Arts both offer free and low cost workshops for people seeking to learn more about how to transform trash into artistic treasures. As of the time of this post there were upcoming workshops being offered in Bookmaking, Puppets, No-sew Costumes, Mosaics and more.  check out their web sites for up to date listings (links are in the pics above)

Our farmer, Zaid Kurdieh is one of the presenters at this year’s Just Food Conference. A summary of the event from the Just Food Website:

On March 29 and 30, 2013, our organization will host the annual Just Food Conference. This two-day event will offer opportunities for the general public, food professionals, entrepreneurs, job seekers, CSA members, community organizers and farmers to come together for two days of workshops and skill- building sessions. The conference will provide attendees with opportunities to learn about cooking and food preservation techniques, CSA trends, and local and national farm and food issues, as well as ways to mobilize communities in order to increase access to farm-fresh, locally grown food.On Friday from 5:30pm-7:30pm, Just Food and Good Food Jobs will co-host a Good Food Jobs networking event for conference participants and the job-seeking public. On Saturday, we’ll host an EXPO from 12pm-6:30pm featuring exemplary local food artisans, sustainable businesses, and organizations. At the end of the conference, we will host a closing reception from 4:30pm-6:30pm at the EXPO.
